Once a year, before the summer heat fades, ILLC holds its annual Rest and Recreation (R and R) activity for its teachers and staff. This year’s R and R was held at the Fontana Leisure Park and Casino in Clark, Pampanga from May 29 – 30, 2014. The teambuilding activity was interesting and exciting because many of the teachers were new. The activity fostered new friendships within the ILLC family. The heat of the sun drove the teachers and staff to be competitive, creative and united as they accepted each challenge as they engaged in an ‘Amazing Race.’ Inspired, the games brought out the best in them while showing team effort, presence of mind and artistry as they created their own cheers, solved puzzle pieces, and solved mathematical equations amidst the themed waterpark as the backdrop.

Before the S.Y. 2014 - 2015 started, the ILLC teachers underwent several trainings and seminars to better equip them for the coming school year. The teachers attended several in-house seminars with relevant topics such as Behavior Modification Techniques (BMT), Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approaches, Sensory Integration, Clinical Reasoning, Speech and Language Stimulation, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) among many others. Another topic that really helped the teachers was the RDI talk given by the mother of Tejus, Mrs. Chitra Sharathchandra. Relationship Development Intervention or RDI taught the teachers to let their students think critically and not just rely on the teacher’s prompts and cues. Dr. Vanessa Cainghug of The Medical City talked about psychiatric conditions which have a high comorbidity possibility with developmental conditions. The Mandaluyong Fire Department also conducted a lecture for the teachers on emergency evacuation in case of fires and other natural disasters.

The Unilab Foundation, Inc. spearheaded Project Inclusion which aims to accommodate and facilitate the employment of persons with intellectual disabilities (PIDs). The DLSU-Center for Business Research and Development research team conducted a series of consultations and collaborations with various special education schools, ILLC included, as well as companies who currently advocate for the workplace inclusion of PIDs. The Unilab Foundation, led by its dynamic head Ms. Rhodora Fresnedi and through the efforts of its coordinator Mr. Grant Javier, has come up with a Human Resource Manual for Empowering Persons with Intellectual Disabilities which is envisioned to be practical and informative to enable employers to acquire information that could assist them in facilitating the accommodation of PIDs in their respective organizations. The HR Manual draft was presented to the stakeholders on February 13, 2015 at the Bayanihan Center, Pasig City.

Job Readiness Programs (JRP)

The JRP aims to teach essential work behaviors and vocational skills. Training is conducted in center based enterprises related to food preparation and service, clerical work, housekeeping, assistant teaching, materials handling and agriculture. Students may also be assigned externally, in partner establishments, for training. Students will work under the supervision of job coaches. The JRP may serve as a prelude to the work placement program.

The Independent Living Learning Program offers standard protocols to assist individuals with special needs to immerse in formal work. The most appropriate among the following employment options is selected upon a careful analysis of client and contextual factors:

About Us

The Independent Living Learning Centre, established in July 2003, caters to the need of children, adolescents and young adults with developmental conditions. The aim has been to promote the students optimum level of independence and quality of life. By maximizing their ability for self - sufficiency in the domains of self care, education, social interaction, work and recreation. Practical learning activities for independent living are provided in home and community setting to help generalize learning.
